How the WSUS Tool Works
Applies to: Medulla – Agent
Version: 5.5.2 and later
Environment: On-Premise / Private SaaS / Shared SaaS
Category: WSUS / Windows 10-11
How does the Windows 11 data reporting process work?
- 1. Updating the workstation agent
The workstation must first update its Medulla agent and its plugins. This operation takes place either when the workstation starts up or when it registers with the server. - 2. Windows 11 Compatibility Check
A scheduled plugin (functioning as a cron job) then analyzes the workstation’s hardware components to determine its compatibility with a migration from Windows 10 to Windows 11. This analysis generates a JSON file used by the Medulla agent. The check is performed when the workstation starts up. - 3. Agent Reads the Results
Each time the workstation is registered (approximately every hour), the agent reads this JSON file and updates a Windows registry key containing the information needed to report back to the server. - 4. Transmission via the inventory
The information is then sent to the server during the workstation inventory. This is performed automatically once a day at a random time, or can be triggered manually via:- An inventory request during a package deployment
- A “Inventory” Quick Action
- 5. Server-side processing
Every day at 4:00 a.m., the Medulla server processes the reported data to populate the major updates table and the various display locations.
How long does this take?
- Depending on when the various steps are executed, the entire process can take 2 to 3 days before the information is visible throughout Medulla.
- If the data is not yet available when an intermediate step begins (inventory, server processing, workstation startup), the delay may be longer.
What should you do if the information isn’t updating?
- Check that the workstation is turned on and has recently registered with Medulla.
- Trigger a Quick Action Inventory or request an inventory during a deployment to speed up data reporting.
- Wait at least 48 to 72 hours before concluding that the behavior is abnormal.
- If no data appears after this time, contact Medulla Support or your administrator.
Why isn’t Windows 11 compatibility information reported immediately?
The reporting of Windows 11 compatibility information is an asynchronous process.
Several operations are performed at different levels of the system (workstation, agent, inventory, and server). Since some steps are relatively resource-intensive and time-consuming, these processes are not executed immediately to avoid impacting the performance of workstations and the infrastructure.
It is therefore normal to experience a delay before the information becomes visible in the Medulla interface.
